Visiting Chouara Tanneries in Fes was an unforgettable cultural highlight! The moment I stepped in, I was amazed by the traditional craftsmanship and the colorful dye pits the vibrant reds, yellows, and blues create a stunning visual display. Watching the artisans carefully work with leather using time-honored techniques was fascinating and gave me a deep appreciation for their skill. The earthy scent is strong, but that’s all part of the authentic experience. I enjoyed learning about the entire process from start to finish, and the guides were friendly and informative. A must-visit spot for anyone exploring the historic medina of Fes and wanting to see real Moroccan heritage in action

Really interesting place to visit and see how traditional leather is made. The view from the rooftop is amazing, colorful vats and a glimpse of centuries-old techniques still in use today. The smell is strong at first, but they usually give you mint to help. Staff explain the process well, and you can watch everything up close. Finished with lots of leather shops nearby selling bags, wallets, and jackets. A very authentic experience and worth a stop if you’re exploring the medina.

Kind of adventurous to get on the rooftop, as you have the feeling that everybody wants to take you in a different tricky place. I suggest you to start by yourself from the ground floor, and then, point the balcony you want to get to, asking somebody to take you there. Prepare some tips, enjoy the view, get used to the smell!

Fez is famous for its leather goods, and one of the must-see places is the famous Chouara tanneries. These are some of the oldest and largest tanneries, where you'll see how leather is traditionally dyed in large stone vats. The best views of the colorful vats can be found at the many viewpoints, which you'll need to walk through local shops to reach. For those with sensitive skin, I recommend smelling mint leaves near the vats, as the smell from the tannery is very intense and it's hard to walk for long without inhaling... Locals give us mint leaves along the way... And after your tour, you can buy beautiful leather goods dyed right here in the area.

I was a bit apprehensive about visiting the tannery because I’d heard about the strong smell and didn’t want to see anything too graphic. It actually wasn’t bad! They even give you a sprig of mint to help with the smell, and you’re kept at a good distance with a nice bird’s-eye view of the process. There’s also a great shop on the way out with tons of leather goods — bags, jackets, slippers, you name it. I doubt everything is made onsite as they claim, but one of the employees mentioned they can do custom pieces or recolor items while you wait, which was pretty cool.

old city Fez, same as is for more than a thousand years, the buildings and way of life, tight alleys and walkways. hospitable welcoming ppl. no cars allowed in fenced-in old city, prepare to do a lot of walking. visit the leather makers and mosaic factory . prices are high but may negotiate. great city and a must see and visit.
