Merzouga Desert is a breathtaking destination, especially at sunrise the golden dunes was stunning. Camel rides across the sweeping sands felt very peaceful. Spending the night in a desert tent is both cozy and memorable. At night, the sky was lit with twinkling stars, making the quiet desert nights truly magical.

The Merzouga dunes are honestly one of those places that just hits differently. Standing out there surrounded by endless sand feels unreal, like you’ve landed on another planet. The dunes go on forever, and watching the sun rise or set over them is something I’ll never forget — the colours change every minute and it’s ridiculously beautiful. Riding camels through the dunes is a bit touristy but actually really chill, and spending the night in a desert camp was a highlight. Sitting around a fire, hearing nothing but the wind, then looking up and seeing a sky full of stars is such a cool experience. It gets seriously hot during the day, so plan around that, but overall Merzouga is peaceful, humbling and 100% worth the trip. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

Merzouga is a small desert village in southeastern Morocco, famous for its proximity to the Erg Chebbi dunes, some of the largest and most spectacular sand dunes in the country. It lies about 50 km from Erfoud and close to the Algerian border. ✨ Highlights of Merzouga: 🏜️ Erg Chebbi dunes: Towering golden dunes that can reach up to 150 meters, offering stunning sunrise and sunset views. 🐪 Camel trekking: One of the most popular activities, where visitors ride camels into the dunes and spend the night in desert camps under the stars. 🎶 Berber culture: The area is home to Amazigh (Berber) communities, where you can experience traditional music, food, and hospitality. 🏍️ Adventure activities: Sandboarding, quad biking, and 4x4 tours across the desert. 🐦 Dayet Srij Lake: A seasonal lake near Merzouga that attracts flamingos and other migratory birds when it fills with water. Merzouga is often included in Morocco’s desert tours, typically starting from Marrakech or Fes, making it a must-visit for travelers seeking the Sahara desert experience.

Erg Chebbi is one of Morocco’s most famous desert landscapes — a stunning sea of golden sand dunes rising dramatically from the flat desert floor. Some dunes reach up to 150 meters, creating a breathtaking horizon that constantly shifts with the wind. It lies near the town of Merzouga in southeastern Morocco, very close to the Algeria border. On clear days, you can sense how close the border is — the desert feels wide, open, and endless. What makes Erg Chebbi unforgettable: • The sand dunes They stretch for more than 20 kilometers, with soft, fine sand that glows orange at sunrise and deep red at sunset. The shapes change daily with the wind, giving the landscape a magical, almost surreal quality. • Camel rides Visitors often enter the dunes on camelback, especially at sunset or sunrise. The slow movement of the camels across the sand makes the experience peaceful and almost timeless. • Desert camps Many travelers stay overnight in Berber desert camps. These camps are usually simple but very comfortable — traditional tents, warm blankets, delicious meals, music around the fire, and a sky full of stars that feels impossibly close. • Hospitality The local Amazigh (Berber) people are known for their kindness and generosity. They prepare tea, share stories, guide visitors safely through the dunes, and make every guest feel completely welcome. • Surroundings Because the area is open and vast, you can feel the edge of the Sahara stretching toward Algeria. It’s one of the places where you truly understand the scale and silence of the desert.

Great experience. (Beware the scams when booking tents .. they will try and charge you €50 - €60 per person for the 10 minutes trip to the camps from the main road. If it takes longer than this they are just driving you around unnecessarily.) Beautiful sunrise and sunset. Go barefeet and feel the soft Sahara sand between your toes. Look at the starry sky, soak up the atmosphere.
