My husband and I booked a High Atlas day tour with Moroccan Food Adventures. There were so many operators offering this, many for lower prices - but as a tour operator myself I wanted to book with a company that seemed to understand the ethos of slowing things down, having more depth and understanding of the area and culture, and truly feeling like a welcome guest (not just another bus passenger). We got all of this from Moroccan Food Adventures! Much to their credit, they were also able to re-book us (at our request) to a day with much better weather, so we were actually able to see the mountains! We lucked out as there had been a lot of snow the day before - our driver was very safe though, and got us through (helped by the fact that he was also local so knew the right people!). Then our local guide in Imlil was clearly one of the best - after our walk through the snowy paths and villages, and over tea and bread making, then lunch, we discovered that he is also the key Toubkal contact for one of the most respected and professional mountain guides in the U.K. (who we know). So we were with one of the best - not just someone dabbling in guiding! We felt privileged to meet his family, then dine on his amazing terrace. Yes, we could have booked a cheaper group tour which would have nominally ticked more boxes (and I would have been interested in camels and argan oil too) but it’s a decision to take: do you want more “experiences” at a surface level, or do you want to “experience” more at a deeper level? We chose the latter and were not disappointed!
I can’t say enough great things about this food tour. This is exactly what I wanted. Sheep’s head, lamb, tangine, olives, juices, couscous, sweets, snails, etc, this tour had it all. Our guide, Khalid, is the kindest man I have ever met. He took us to the very best, off the beaten path spots for the best Moroccan food. I would do this tour every time I am here. It was perfect!
I joined a food tour yesterday evening. And while I fully believe the intent of both the tour guide (truly a very nice guy) and the tour operator are good, I feel they missed out on a couple of points. I have to say in advance I’m a spoiled food tour participant, as I did many around the world (15+). I also did a food tour a couple of years ago in Marrakech. I chose this tour as it seemed to be more expensive then others that I found so I thought that would mean that it was of high quality. When I do a food tour, I do that for two reasons. To eat food on places I wouldn’t go myself, and to learn about food customs and -culture. I think the tour hit the spot here and there, but also missed out on opportunities. We were rarely explained why we were eating a certain kind of food, also not why we were eating it on the spot where we were eating it. Also the choice for restaurants was not spot on. I will not go in details to spoil too much of the surprise, but let me give you one example. I know Moroccans love sweets, and also are known for their sweet treats. For the last stop, the only sweet stop, we were brought to a touristy place, where we were given a variation of (dry) cookies with a fruit juice. Without explanation what was special or typical about these cookies, when they were eaten normally, what their origin was, also not why this place was chosen (what seemed a very strange choice to me, not authentic at all with only tourists, loud western music, we even were sitting on this same roof top before the tour ourselves so very easy to find). The administration of the tour did go wel and was professional. We had to change are booking with one day and that was easily arranged via email.
Fantastic tour company. Great communication. We did the Snacks and Shopping in Marrakesh with Atman and the Evening Food Tour with Rashid. Both guides were extremely knowledgeable and helpful. We experienced food in places that we would have never found on our own. When shopping, we could decide what we wanted to see and Atman was very helpful in telling us about the quality of the items and about shipping. We saw where the artisans were making the goods and went out of the touristy areas in both tours.
We had an excellent experience with Rasheed. Lots of great food, local places, information about food, Moroccan customs, local ways of life. These were local places, not tourist restaurants, definitely worth adding to your itinerary. We had slow cooked lamb, couscous, donuts & soup, bread from the communal bakery, prickly pear to name but a few things. For the sake of your stomach, don't eat lunch before going..... 😀 its a lot of little bits that truly add up.
This was a real highlight of our holiday. We learnt so much about the culture and food from our knowledgeable guide Bassam who was very friendly and struck the perfect balance between letting us relax and moving us on to the next delicious experience. Would recommend at the beginning of your stay in Marrakech.
